Wards, local governments, and state congresses have all been postponed indefinitely by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a letter dated July 6, the Independent National Electoral Commission, or INEC, was informed of the event.
The letter was signed by Mai Mala Buni, the National Chairman of the APC’s Caretaker Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, CECPC, and Senator John Akpanudoedehe, the National Secretary of the CECPC.
“We refer to our letter reference number APC/NHDQ/INEC/19/021/20 dated June 10, 2021 on the above subject and wish to inform the Commission that the Party has rescheduled its Congresses and National Convention to a later date, which will be communicated to you,” read the letter addressed to INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu.
“This serves as a formal notification pursuant to the provisions of Section 85 of the Electoral Act (2010) as amended.
“While hoping to receive your cooperation, please accept the assurances of my highest esteem.”
Although no rationale was given for the move, Vanguard learned that the ruling party was encountering logistical issues with the exercise’s implementation in states.
Most state chapters of the party, it was said, had not received the materials required for the congresses.
Similarly, the party had lately expanded its membership registration and revalidation exercise to around four states, an exercise that must be completed before any congress can begin.
The APC just published a schedule for its next congresses. Ward congress forms will be available for purchase from July 1 to 7; ward congresses will be held on July 24.
Between July 26 and 30, forms for LGA party posts will be available for purchase, and LGA congresses (including the three-man delegate to the National Convention) will be held on August 14.
Additionally, from August 23 to 27, state exco forms will be available for purchase, with state congresses taking place on September 18.
