BHCPF: NHIS Commences Capacity Building For Management and Staff of Benue State Health Insurance Agency

The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) has continued to sustain its drive towards the attainment of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), by organizing a One-Day capacity building training, for the management and staff of Benue State Health Insurance Agency (BNSHIA), in makurdi, Benue state.

The NHIS State Coordinator Dr. Christopher Okoh, in his presentation titled: Basic Healthcare Provision Fund Overview; He underscored the significance of the training which is aimed at impacting the Management and staff of the Agency with the requisite knowledge on the operations and processes of the Basic Health Provision Fund.

Christopher highlighted  the programme as an indication of the fact that the drive towards universal health coverage was gathering speed, adding that BHCPF was developed to ensure that every Nigerian across all socio-economic strata had access to affordable and quality healthcare.

According to Him,the training exercise is part of a series of confidence building initiatives of the Executive Secretary of the Scheme, Mohammed Sambo, to ensure that,state health insurance agencies across the country are in tune with the operations and processes of Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF) implementation.

The State coordinator emphasized that the BHCPF training is a practical demonstration of the prospects of extending coverage to the non-formal sectors of the economy, adding that BHCPF was an innovative approach to financing healthcare for the vulnerable. He stressed further that the attainment of UHC was embedded in President Muhammadu Buhari administration next level agenda for health.

Christopher in his paper presentation explained that the Scheme which is one of the implementing agencies of the fund was now properly positioned and equipped to provide effective oversight of the programme guided by the ongoing reforms of its operations. While highlighting benefits of synergy between NHIS and state health insurance agencies, Christopher, maintained that achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) in the country was a task that can be achieved when all stakeholders within the health insurance ecosystem collaborate effectively, expressing the optimism that UHC was achievable.

The Executive Secretary of Benue State Health Insurance Agency (BNSHIA), Dr. Nyiyongo Korve in his reaction, expressed gratitude to the Management and Staff of NHIS in ensuring that Health Insurance is effective and efficiently implemented in Benue state. Adding that the Capacity building by the Scheme is timely as the state agency is in the process of organizing sensitization workshop for the Primary Health Center’s in the state. ‘We believe that NHIS will continue to support BNSHIA to achieve her mandate’.

The BHCPF is the fundamental healthcare funding provided by the National Health Act. It was included in the national budget for the first time in 2018 since the Act was signed in 2014.
