COVID-19: Nigeria logs in four new deaths, records highest daily infection surge in six months

Nigeria has reported 747 COVID-19 infections over the past 24 hours, health authorities said, marking the highest surge in daily infections in six months.

Four new deaths were also confirmed from COVID-19-related complications, according to the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control NCDC.

In an update on its Facebook page Wednesday night, the NCDC said while the new infections raised the total number of cases to 176,011, about 2, 167 deaths is now registered in Nigeria with an additional four deaths.

The latest surge in both deaths and infections is of particular concern in light of the confirmation by Nigerian authorities that the country has entered the third wave of infections.

Hospitals across the country will further be put under severe pressure as COVID-19 figures continue to rise amid an ongoing strike by resident doctors.

The strike by the National Association of Resident Doctors, NARD, entered its fourth day Thursday morning halting several services in hospitals across the nation.

Breakdown

Thirteen states and the Federal Capital Territory FCT contributed to the 747 new Infections.

A breakdown of the NCDC data revealed that about a third of the daily infections in Nigeria on Wednesday were in Lagos.

Out of the 747 new cases, 488 were found in the commercial city that is the Epicentre of COVID-19 in Nigeria.

Akwa-Ibom came second on the log with 121 infections, followed by Oyo with 29 cases. Rivers had 25 cases while Ogun reported 15.

The FCT and Kaduna parred at 13 Infections. Kwara recorded 11 while Ekiti and Osun registered 10 cases each.

Edo reported six while Abia confirmed just three cases.

Anambra recorded two while plateau state came last on the log with one infection.

Meanwhile, according to the NCDC data, of the over 176, 000 new cases, 165,208 people have recovered and been discharged from hospitals across the country.

Nigeria has tested over 2.5 million samples out of its estimated 200million population.
