The University of Lagos (UNILAG) Senate, Akoka, has directed the institution’s management to ask all students to vacate hostels “immediately.”
The decision was unavoidable, according to a member of the Senate who was present at the meeting but did not want to be cited since he is not authorized to do so.
“The Senate at its meeting held today considered the situation of third wave of COVID-19 in Lagos State and its implications for the university. The Senate resolved that all students should vacate the halls of residence immediately,” the source said.
The Senate also approved the start of virtual lectures on July 26th, according to the source.
Nonye Oguama, the principal assistant registrar in charge of information, did not pick up our reporter’s calls since her phone line was busy.
The Senate, which consists of professors, department chairmen, and other lecturers, is the university’s supreme organ in matters of academics, including the approval of results and the awarding of certificates.
Meanwhile, Dele Ashiru, the head of the university’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), verified the development over the phone to our correspondent.
Mr. Ashiru, who is also a member of the Senate, said the decision was necessary in light of an impending third wave of the pandemic in Lagos, and specifically on the campus.
The new revelation, according to the ASUU chair, vindicates his union’s earlier position on the lack of proper protective facilities against the pandemic on Nigerian schools.
