The Kaduna state government has filed new charges against the leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, after the Kaduna State High Court discharged and acquitted him and his wife.
Remember that El-Zakzaky and his wife, Zeenat, were released and acquitted of all allegations filed against them by Justice Gideon Kurada of the Kaduna State High Court.
The charges against El-Zakzaky and his wife were not meant to be brought, according to Kurada, who claims that the state government cannot arraign someone for a crime that did not exist at the time.
The judge, on the other hand, found that the charges were brought against the two in 2018 under the state’s Penal Law, which was enacted in 2017 in response to an alleged crime committed in 2015.
Dari Bayero, the state government’s lawyer, revealed that new charges had been filed against the IMN leader before a Federal High Court under the Treason and Treasonable Offences Act.
He stated that the government did not agree with Justice Kurada’s rationale and conclusion, and that the matter will be appealed.
According to him, “We are going to appeal, there is no doubt about it, in fact, we have obtained the court judgment because we are not in agreement with my Lord’s reasoning and conclusion, it is not in consonance with the facts on ground.”
