Ooni of Ife calls for investigation into Sunday Igboho’s arrest in Benin republic

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, has called for an investigation into the recent arrest of a Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo also Known as Sunday Igboho by security operatives in Benin republic.

The Ooni made the call on Wednesday while inaugurating a 28-member committee set up to tackle rising insecurity in the South West region. He tasked the committee to also look into the circumstances surrounding the controversial arrest of Mr. Igboho.

The committee’s coordinator, Akin Osuntokun, reaffirmed that the group will investigate the problems surrounding Igboho’s detention and associated subjects.

“The Ooni of Ife established an advisory council comprised of notable Yoruba sons and daughters across the political spectrum,” according to Osuntokun. It’s known as the Ooni Caucus.

“The inauguration event had been planned for over a month, and the fact that it coincided with news of Sunday Igboho’s arrest in Cotonou was just coincidental. Nonetheless, the council is keenly interested in the latest development and will respond appropriately as soon as possible.”

THE FOLIO POST reported how Mr. Igboho on Monday evening was arrested at Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic while trying to leave the country for Germany by the country’s police officials.

He was “disembarked from his plane, arrested by the Beninese police while he was trying to travel to Germany and then transferred to the Cotonou Criminal Brigade,” according to a Benin newspaper, Banouto.

It was learnt that under the agreements between Nigeria and Benin, Mr. Igboho’s extradition should be concluded without hindrance.

Mr. Igboho has led rallies in Ondo, Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, and Ogun states. He threatened to hold the rally in Lagos on July 3 but his home was invaded barely 72 hours to the planned date.

While some of his aides were arrested with various weapons, according to security officials, he escaped and has since been declared wanted.

Since his arrest was made public on Monday evening, there has been a backlash and criticism, especially by supporters.

On Wednesday, his supporters staged protests around the activists’ resident in Ibadan, Oyo state.

The Nigerian government is yet to speak about his arrest.
